Bonnie Walks – Hot and Cold Weather Policy (UK)
1. Purpose
This policy ensures the safety, welfare, and comfort of all dogs in our care during periods of extreme hot or cold weather in the UK. It also protects staff and maintains high standards of service.
2. General Principles
- Dog safety is always the top priority.
- Walks may be modified, shortened, rescheduled, or cancelled based on weather conditions.
- Owners will be informed of any changes as early as possible.
- Staff will follow UK animal welfare guidance and use professional judgement at all times.
3. Hot Weather Policy
3.1 Temperature Guidelines
- 20–23°C: Walks proceed with caution (shorter duration, shaded routes).
- 24–26°C: Reduced walk times; increased water breaks; avoid strenuous activity.
- 27°C and above: Walks cancelled or replaced with indoor visits (toilet breaks, enrichment, short shaded outings only if safe).
3.2 Safety Measures
- Walks scheduled during cooler times (early morning or late evening).
- Avoid hot surfaces (e.g., pavements that may burn paws).
- Carry fresh water at all times.
- Use shaded routes and green spaces.
- Monitor for signs of heatstroke (excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting).
3.3 High-Risk Dogs
Extra care is taken with:
- Brachycephalic breeds (e.g., Bulldogs, Pugs)
- Elderly or overweight dogs
- Dogs with medical conditions
These dogs may receive indoor visits instead of walks.
4. Cold Weather Policy
4.1 Temperature Guidelines
- 0 to 5°C: Normal walks with monitoring and appropriate gear.
- 0°C and below: Shortened walks; increased monitoring.
- Below -3°C or icy/snowy conditions: Walks may be cancelled or replaced with home visits.
4.2 Safety Measures
- Avoid icy or hazardous terrain.
- Use well-lit, safe walking routes during darker winter hours.
- Dry dogs thoroughly after wet walks.
- Monitor for signs of discomfort (shivering, lifting paws, slowing down).
4.3 Protective Measures
- Dog coats used where appropriate (with owner consent).
- Paw protection considered in icy/salted conditions.
5. Extreme Weather Events
In cases of severe weather warnings (heatwaves, snowstorms, storms):
- Walks may be cancelled entirely.
- Alternative services (home visits, enrichment sessions) will be offered where possible.
- Client communication will be prioritised.
6. Owner Responsibilities
Owners should:
- Provide accurate health and behavioural information about their dog.
- Inform Bonnie Walks of any sensitivities to heat or cold.
- Provide suitable equipment if required (e.g., coats, booties).
- Ensure access to fresh water at home.
7. Staff Responsibilities
Staff will:
- Monitor weather forecasts daily.
- Make professional decisions based on safety.
- Carry water, leads, and emergency contact details.
- Report any health concerns immediately.
8. Communication
- Clients will be notified of changes via agreed communication channels (e.g., WhatsApp, SMS).
- Emergency changes may occur at short notice in rapidly changing weather.
9. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or in line with updated UK animal welfare guidance.
Bonnie Walks is committed to ensuring every dog remains safe, comfortable, and happy—whatever the weather.
