Livestock Law Update (UK) – Important Information for Dog Owners

Recent changes to UK law mean there are now stricter rules and penalties in place to protect livestock from dog attacks.

Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025, which came into force in March 2026, dog owners and handlers must take extra care when walking near farm animals such as sheep, cattle, and goats.

What’s changed?

- Fines for livestock worrying are now unlimited.

- Police have increased powers, including the ability to seize dogs involved in incidents.

- An offence can occur even without physical contact—chasing or causing distress to livestock is enough.

- The law applies on farmland, public footpaths, and nearby roads.

What is livestock worrying?

This includes chasing, attacking, or allowing a dog to be loose around livestock in a way that could cause injury, stress, or harm.

Our advice to dog owners

At Bonnie Walks, we prioritise safety and responsible dog handling.

We strongly recommend:

- Keeping dogs on a lead near livestock at all times

- Remaining alert in rural and countryside areas

- Respecting signage and landowner guidance

- Ensuring your dog has reliable recall before allowing off-lead walking

Failure to follow these rules can result in serious consequences for both the dog and owner.

Our commitment

Bonnie Walks is committed to safe, responsible walking practices and fully complies with all UK legislation. Your dog’s safety—and the safety of other animals—is always our priority.
